About

Rick is passionate about helping students think deeply, reason through challenges, problem solve, and discover that learning can be both meaningful and accessible. He loves creating engaging and dynamic lessons that encourage curiosity and understanding, especially in science. One of his favorite moments as a teacher is when a student says, "This makes sense," because it represents a breakthrough - something that once felt out of reach has suddenly become understandable and exciting.

He appreciates the freedom to be creative in his teaching and values that Colearn Academy keeps student needs at the center of every decision. Rick also loves the strong sense of care throughout the school community, sharing that even in a remote environment, the level of attention and support students receive is exceptional across every grade level.

Outside of teaching, Rick is actively involved in his church and enjoys investing in both his students and his community.

Role

Mr. Spinell works with our high school students, teaching a variety of engaging and practical courses including Economics, Consumer Math, Chemistry, One Year Adventure Novel, Career and Life Skills, and Speech & Debate. He is passionate about helping students think critically, communicate effectively, and connect learning to real-life experiences while creating an encouraging and engaging classroom environment.
